Agrimony Agrimonia eupatoria (Rose Family) This is a nontoxic astringent herb that is thought to be especially safe for children. It has many tonic and diuretic properties. It is traditionally used by herbalists for the treatment of conditions such as bed-wetting, bleeding, coughs, diabetes and diarrhea. It is also considered by many herbalists to be useful in the treatment of jaundice & liver problems. Combined with other ingredients and applied in salves for sprains and bruises. It is also combined with other herbs to treat conditions such as, kidney stones, sore throats, rheumatism and arthritis.

Agrimony contains a compound called "agrimophol" which will cause parasites to lose their grip on on tissue lining so they can be evacuated from the body easily. While this herb is useful in treatment of diarrhea it should not be given to or taken by anyone with constipation. Agrimony is known to cause an increase in "B cells". (A type of lymphocyte). B cells are responsible for the bodies immune response to such problems as bacteria, some viruses, funguses and parasites. Certain types of cancers like ovarian cancer and chronic leukemia deplete these B cells. Agrimony may offer an immunostimulant benefit in such cases. This herb is suitable for use in applications such as a tea or taken in capsule form.

This herb is especially nice to have on hand for children's ailments. This herb may be used alone or in combination with other herbs and formulas and may be prescribed by a trained Natural health care practitioner trained in herbal medicine. Common applications of agrimony include:

Infusion: Agrimony is a gentle remedy ideal for diarrhea, especially in infants and children. It can be taken by breastfeeding mothers to dose babies. Tincture: Is more potent and drying than the infusion and is more effective if the condition involves excess phlegm or mucus. May be use for cystitis, urinary infections, bronchitis and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Poultice: May be applied as a poultice of the leaves on the forehead to give relief for migraines.

Wash: Use the infusion to gently rinse wounds, sores, eczema, and varicose ulcers. Eyewash: Use a weak infusion (10 g herb to 500 ml water) may be used for conjunctivitis.
