Back to Common Herbs
This herb is primarily used by TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practitioners and herbalists in the treatment of such symptoms as cold limbs, fatigue and sleeplessness. It is used to dilate blood vessels of the lower limbs as well as increase coronary flow and metabolism. In TCM it is used with other herbs to reduce or eliminate the toxic effect of large doses. It is used to warm and strengthen the spleen and kidney for conditions like impotence. It  decreases emissions and edema, expels cold and alleviates pain in the shoulder joint. In Western medicine Aconite is said to be poisonous in all but the smallest doses and is rarely prescribed for internal use. More commonly , it is applied to unbroken skin to relieve pain from bruises or neurological conditions. In Ayurvedic medicine, aconite is used to treat neuralgia, asthma, and heart weakness. Aconite has been added to salves because of its painkilling action on neuralgia, lumbago, and rheumatism. The tincture has been given in one-drop doses for heart failure, high fevers, pneumonia, pleurisy and tonsillitis. Use only under a professional’s supervision. Homeopathic practitioners use the fresh flowering spike, the flowers and the roots, which yields a substance called aconitine and is often used and to reduce the pulse rate. It is also used for sciatica, neuralgia and chills. It is also used for shock (especially after surgery or childbirth), chicken pox, measles, mumps, croup, toothache and teething.

Caution: Aconite in the wrong dosage can become deadly poison. Ingestion of even 0.2-0.5 grams of the root that contains 1%aconitine may cause death to an adult.
