What is Qi gong?

In order to understand what Qi gong is you must first understand what definition of the word. The word "Qi" means an energy or life force which flows through all of us and gives us life. The word "gong" means the work or benefits acquired through  perseverance and many hours of practice and/or study of something over a period of time. The two words put together means the study and/or practice of the "life energy". Thus the practice of Qi gong means working with our life energy. This is accomplished through specific breathing techniques, gentle movement, and meditation to cleanse, strengthen, and circulate the life energy (qi). We do this by learning to control the flow and distribution of the Qi thru our bodies in order to maintain, improve and balance our mind and body.

There are many ways that you may use Qi gong to benefit your life. A few of these are listed below. This article will discuss two major areas of Qi gong that have different uses.  It can be used in the practice of medicine to prevent and cure disease. It can be used in a martial arts and Tai chi forms to add and direct power and strength to the art.

Medical Qi gong  is preventative and self healing in nature. It is a system of combined breathing, meditation and gentle movement that is used to treat ill health. A qualified Qi gong instructor will teach the appropriate "qi gong" for their patient's particular condition. Qi gong improves the functioning of the heart, digestive system, circulatory system and nervous system. It also removes stress products (toxins) from the body created by the constant pressures of daily life. Anyone can practice qi gong. There are techniques suitable for every age and physical condition. Qi Gong includes standing, seated, and supine methods. With only slight adjustments in technique, it is possible to practice most standing exercises from a seated or lying position. This makes qi gong an ideal exercise for patients with differing conditions conditions. It can be modified to suit each individuals unique needs and desires.

Martial arts Qi gong is a form that allows the martial artist using certain Qi gong techniques to pull in large amounts of Qi and then focus it. It is used for all forms of martial arts and Tai Chi.
